Σχετικά

Heraklion's huge cathedral.

The cathedral of Agios Minas in Heraklion is one of the largest churches in Greece, able to hold around 8,000 people. It is dedicated to Saint Minas, the patron saint of the city. Construction began in 1862, was interrupted by the Cretan revolt of 1866, and was completed in 1895.

The cathedral has a cross-shaped plan, two tall bell towers and a large dome. Inside, it is richly decorated with icons and frescoes. Next to it stands the small old church of Agios Minas, built in 1735, which is also worth a look.

The square around the cathedral, with the church of Agia Ekaterini, is one of the most beautiful in Heraklion.

Heraklion is the capital of Crete and its biggest city, with a busy port, the island's main airport and a lively old town inside massive Venetian walls. The Archaeological Museum and Knossos make it the centre of Minoan Crete, and the city's markets, cafes and restaurants are some of the best on the island. Around the city, the coast has long sandy beaches like Ammoudara and Karteros, and the wine villages of Archanes and Peza are a short drive south.

Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. Περισσότερα για Ηράκλειο
