Crete's busy capital, with museums and Venetian walls.
Heraklion is the capital and largest city of Crete, and the fourth largest city in Greece. The area has been inhabited since around 7000 BC, and it was the port of Knossos in Minoan times. The Arabs founded the city as Chandax in the 9th century, and the Venetians called it Candia.
Behind the busy streets, you'll find a lively old town full of history: the Venetian walls, the Koules fortress, the Lions fountain, the loggia and many churches. The Archaeological Museum, with its Minoan treasures, is one of the most important in Greece. The 1866 street market is great for herbs, cheese, honey and raki.
Heraklion is also a great place to eat, with many excellent tavernas and mezedopolia. It's the main gateway to Crete, with the busiest airport and port on the island.
Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. Περισσότερα για Ηράκλειο
