A mountain convent on the slopes of Psiloritis.
The convent of Agia Irini lies high on the slopes of Mount Psiloritis, above the village of Kroussonas, about 25 km south-west of Heraklion. It dates from the Venetian period, was destroyed by the Ottomans and was rebuilt in the 20th century.
The nuns are known for their weaving, embroidery and icon painting, and you can buy their work. The convent is surrounded by green slopes and has a peaceful atmosphere.
The drive up offers great views over central Crete.
Kroussonas itself is a lively mountain village with a strong tradition of resistance, and the road from there up to the convent is narrow but beautiful. The convent's workshops produce fine woven fabrics, embroidery and icons, and the nuns are happy to show visitors around. From here, paths lead higher onto the slopes of Psiloritis, and it's a good place to see the quiet side of Crete close to Heraklion.
Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. Περισσότερα για Ηράκλειο
