Σχετικά

A green hill village at 610 m.

Prinias is a small village about 25 km south-west of Heraklion, at an altitude of 610 m. It's surrounded by green hills and olive groves.

Above the village, on the plateau of Patela, lie the ruins of ancient Rizinia, with its famous 7th century BC temples. The carved wine presses near the village are also worth seeing.

The village is a nice place to stop on the road between Heraklion and the Messara. From the top of the Patela hill, you can see much of central Crete, from Psiloritis to the Dikti mountains. The site has been excavated by Italian archaeologists for decades and finds from here, including the famous sculptures of the temple, are in the Heraklion museum.

Gortyna lies in the heart of the Messara, around the ruins of ancient Gortyn, the Roman capital of Crete. Agioi Deka is the main village, and the area stretches south to the Asterousia mountains and the remote coast of Lentas and Kali Limenes. The landscape is a mix of olive groves, small villages and wild mountains. The south coast here is one of the warmest and driest places in Crete, with quiet beaches and tavernas serving fresh fish.

Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. Περισσότερα για Ηράκλειο
