Σχετικά

Carved stone wine presses.

The carved wine presses near Prinias are a reminder of the long history of wine making in Crete. Grapes were trodden in hollows cut into the rock, and the juice flowed through channels into containers.

The presses are small but interesting, and easy to combine with ancient Rizinia above the village.

Wine has been made in Crete since Minoan times, and in the Venetian period Cretan wine, especially sweet malvasia, was exported all over Europe. These presses, cut into the rock, show how simple yet effective the old methods were. The juice flowed into a lower basin, where it was collected and carried away to ferment in jars. Ask in the village for directions, as they are not always easy to find.

Gortyna lies in the heart of the Messara, around the ruins of ancient Gortyn, the Roman capital of Crete. Agioi Deka is the main village, and the area stretches south to the Asterousia mountains and the remote coast of Lentas and Kali Limenes. The landscape is a mix of olive groves, small villages and wild mountains. The south coast here is one of the warmest and driest places in Crete, with quiet beaches and tavernas serving fresh fish.

In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. Περισσότερα για Ηράκλειο
