A green walk from Lake Votomos at Zaros.
The Rouvas gorge lies on the southern slopes of Psiloritis, above the village of Zaros. It's part of the E4 European long-distance path.
The walk starts at Lake Votomos and climbs past the monastery of Agios Nikolaos, then follows a path through the gorge, shaded by oak and plane trees, with wooden bridges and stairs. The walk to the top takes about 2 to 3 hours, and the Rouvas forest at the top is one of the largest oak forests in Crete.
The gorge is part of the E4 European long-distance path, which crosses Crete from west to east. The walk from Lake Votomos up through the gorge to the Rouvas forest and the chapel of Agios Ioannis is one of the most beautiful in central Crete. In autumn, the oak forest turns golden, and in spring the stream is full of water.
Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. Περισσότερα για Ηράκλειο
