A Venetian monastery above Zaros.
The Vrontisi monastery lies on the southern slopes of Mount Psiloritis, between the villages of Zaros and Vorizia, at about 550 m. From here you have a beautiful view over the Messara plain and the Asterousia mountains.
The monastery was first mentioned in 1474, but it is older. During the Cretan Renaissance it was an important centre of art and learning, and the painter Michael Damaskinos may have worked here. The highlight is a 15th century Venetian fountain at the entrance, decorated with reliefs of Adam and Eve. The church has fine frescoes from the 14th century.
Combine your visit with Zaros, its lake and the walk up the Rouvas gorge.
Gortyna lies in the heart of the Messara, around the ruins of ancient Gortyn, the Roman capital of Crete. Agioi Deka is the main village, and the area stretches south to the Asterousia mountains and the remote coast of Lentas and Kali Limenes. The landscape is a mix of olive groves, small villages and wild mountains. The south coast here is one of the warmest and driest places in Crete, with quiet beaches and tavernas serving fresh fish.
Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. Περισσότερα για Ηράκλειο
