Fournou Korifi is an early Minoan settlement near Myrtos, where the Goddess of Myrtos was found.
The site lies on top of a steep hill with excellent views of the coast near Myrtos. It was excavated in 1967 by Peter Warren and was in use only during the Early Minoan II period, around 2500 BC. The settlement had about 100 rooms, and finds included two weaving looms and the famous Goddess of Myrtos, now in the Agios Nikolaos museum.
Fournou Korifi has been interpreted in different ways: as a large household, a village or a group of families. The Goddess of Myrtos, a clay jug in the shape of a woman holding a jug, is one of the most famous early Minoan figures. The site is a short climb from the road near Myrtos.
Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance. Just north, Elounda and Plaka look across to the fortress island of Spinalonga, one of the most moving places on the island. Περισσότερα για Λασίθι
