A Minoan villa on a hill.
The Minoan villa of Pyrgos lies on a hill near Myrtos. It was an important administrative centre.
Pyrgos lies on a hill close to the Myrtos valley, with a harbour and mountains providing protection. The settlement had a courtyard, many rooms, a country house and a tomb. It was excavated from 1970 by the archaeologist Gerald Cadogan. The site was in use from the Early Minoan period and gives a good picture of a rural Minoan centre.
The site lies on a hill above the village of Myrtos, with wide views over the Libyan Sea. A large villa stood at the top, and the settlement around it was in use from the Early Minoan to the Late Minoan period. The climb is short, and the views are worth it.
Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance. Just north, Elounda and Plaka look across to the fortress island of Spinalonga, one of the most moving places on the island. Περισσότερα για Λασίθι
