A small unorganised local beach with views of Dia island and planes landing.

Kokkini is a little sandy beach with a rocky seabed that gets busy with locals on summer weekends but is calm the rest of the time. There are no facilities, bigger organised beaches are right next door. Locals like it for the view of Dia island and the planes coming in to Heraklion.

The seabed is a mix of sand and rocks, and the views stretch out to the island of Dia. Planes on approach to the airport pass overhead. It's simple but pleasant, and handy if you're staying in the area.

Hersonissos is the busiest resort area of Crete, stretching along the north coast east of Heraklion, with Gouves, Hersonissos, Stalida and Malia. The beaches are long and sandy, with every facility, and the nightlife is lively. Behind the resorts, villages like Koutouloufari, Piskopiano, Mochos and Krasi keep a traditional atmosphere and offer cooler evenings with views. The Minoan palace of Malia, the Cretaquarium and the open-air museum of Lychnostatis are all in the area.
