A huge cave and ancient Minoan sanctuary.
Skotino cave lies on a hill above the village of Skotino, a few kilometres inland from Gouves. It is one of the largest caves in Crete, about 160 m long and 36 m wide, with a huge entrance chamber full of strange rock formations that look like animals and figures.
The cave was an important sanctuary from Minoan times onwards. Arthur Evans was among the first to explore it, and later French and Greek archaeologists found bronze figurines, pottery and other offerings, some dating to the earliest Minoan periods. A small church of Agia Paraskevi stands at the entrance, and a festival is held there every July.
The cave isn't lit or managed, so bring a torch and good shoes, and be careful on the slippery rocks.
Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. Περισσότερα για Ηράκλειο
