Agia Marina Beach

Platanias, Chania ·North coast

About

A long resort beach west of Chania, with artificial coves that keep the water calm.

Agia Marina is one of the busiest resorts near Chania. The long sandy beach is split into sheltered coves by breakwaters, so you can swim even on windy days. Fully organised, with watersports, diving and plenty of bars and tavernas. The little island of Agioi Theodoroi lies just offshore.

Agia Marina is one of the liveliest resorts west of Chania, with hotels, bars, restaurants and shops lining the main road. The beach is long and sandy, and breakwaters create calm coves along the shore.

Just offshore lies the island of Thodorou, a protected refuge for the Cretan wild goat, the kri-kri. Legend says it's a sea monster turned to stone. There's plenty of watersports and a dive centre. The beach is very busy in high season, so arrive early to get a good spot.

Around Platanias

The west of Crete is the island at its most dramatic. Chania has the most beautiful Venetian old town on Crete, wrapped around a harbour with a lighthouse and a domed mosque. In the evening the narrow lanes of Splantzia and the old Jewish quarter fill up with tavernas and small bars. More about Chania
