Anopolis is a mountain village in Sfakia, on a plateau above Loutro. In ancient times it was an important city. It's the birthplace of Daskalogiannis, the leader of the 1770 revolt against the Ottomans, whose statue stands in the square.
Near the village is the Aradena gorge, crossed by a famous iron bridge used for bungee jumping. Paths lead down from Anopolis to Loutro and the coast.
Anopolis was an important ancient city, and the area has been inhabited for thousands of years. Today the village is spread across a high plateau, with houses among olive trees and fields. It's a quiet base for walks: to Loutro on the coast, to the Aradena gorge and its famous bridge, or up into the White Mountains. Try the local cheese and Sfakian pies in the village tavernas.
The west of Crete is the island at its most dramatic. Chania has the most beautiful Venetian old town on Crete, wrapped around a harbour with a lighthouse and a domed mosque. In the evening the narrow lanes of Splantzia and the old Jewish quarter fill up with tavernas and small bars. More about Chania
