Avdou

Hersonissos, Heraklion

About

Village in the Aposelemis valley, on the way up to the Lasithi plateau.

Avdou is a working village among olive groves and orchards, with a quiet square and kafeneia. Several small churches in and around the village still have old wall paintings. It makes a good stop when you drive from the coast to the Lasithi plateau.

Around Hersonissos

Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. More about Heraklion
