Gorge of Ha

Ierapetra, Lasithi

About

A narrow canyon for experts.

The Ha gorge lies near Pachia Ammos, in the Thripti mountains of eastern Crete. It's one of the most impressive gorges in Crete, with walls up to 300 m high and only a few metres apart in places.

It's very difficult to cross, with waterfalls and pools, and only experienced canyoners with proper equipment should attempt it. From the road, you can see the dramatic cleft in the mountain.

The name comes from the Cretan dialect word hasko, meaning to gape or separate, and the gorge really looks like the mountain was split in two. Being almost inaccessible, it keeps a rich and diverse flora and fauna. The exit of the gorge is near the village of Vasiliki and the Minoan site of the same name. From the road between Pachia Ammos and Ierapetra, look up at the dramatic cleft in the Thripti mountains.

Around Ierapetra

Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance. Just north, Elounda and Plaka look across to the fortress island of Spinalonga, one of the most moving places on the island. More about Lasithi
