About

A family resort with a long beach.

Kalyves is a green village in the Apokoronas area, on the south side of Souda bay. It has a long sandy beach, tavernas and cafes, and a relaxed family atmosphere.

The village is a good base for exploring the traditional villages of Apokoronas, like Gavalochori and Vamos.

Kalyves is the main village of the Armenoi area of Apokoronas, about 19 km east of Chania, right next to the ancient city of Aptera. The village has grown in recent years with holiday homes, but its centre, with the river and the little harbour, still feels local. In the evening, the tavernas along the water are a lovely place to eat while the sun sets over Souda bay.

Apokoronas lies between Chania and Rethymno, a green area of rolling hills, springs and traditional villages such as Vamos, Gavalochori, Vrisses and Kefalas. Many of the stone houses have been restored, and the villages keep a calm, local life. The coast along Souda bay and towards Georgioupoli has long beaches and the resorts of Kalyves and Almyrida, while inland Lake Kournas and the foothills of the White Mountains invite walks. Yoghurt with honey under the plane trees of Vrisses is a must.

The west of Crete is the island at its most dramatic. Chania has the most beautiful Venetian old town on Crete, wrapped around a harbour with a lighthouse and a domed mosque. In the evening the narrow lanes of Splantzia and the old Jewish quarter fill up with tavernas and small bars. More about Chania
