Arvi Gorge

Gorges · Viannos
Mountain village in Viannos, below an ancient sanctuary.
Kato Symi lies on the southern slopes of the Dikti mountains. Higher up, at about 1,200 m, is the sanctuary of Hermes and Aphrodite, used for worship for well over a thousand years since Minoan times. The village was a centre of the resistance during the Second World War.
Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day. In the south, the wide Messara plain holds the palace of Phaistos, the Roman ruins of Gortyna and the famous caves above the bay of Matala. More about Heraklion
