About

A small mountain village.

Kefali is a small mountain village in the west of Chania, on the road to Elafonisi. It's surrounded by greenery and has a Byzantine church with frescoes.

Kefali is one of the chestnut villages of the Inachori area, on the road from Kissamos to Elafonisi. The Byzantine church of the Transfiguration has frescoes from the 14th century. Its tavernas, with terraces looking over the valley towards the sea, are a popular stop for lunch on the way back from Elafonisi.

Kissamos is the wild north-west corner of Crete. The landscape is rugged and dry near the coast and green in the hills, with chestnut villages, olive groves and vineyards. Beaches here are among the most beautiful on the island: Balos, Falasarna and the coves of Gramvousa, reached by boat from Kissamos harbour. The town itself is a relaxed place with Roman mosaics in its museum and tavernas by the sea. The sunsets on the west coast are unforgettable.

  • Nearest airport: Chania airport (CHQ), about 69 km by road

The west of Crete is the island at its most dramatic. Chania has the most beautiful Venetian old town on Crete, wrapped around a harbour with a lighthouse and a domed mosque. In the evening the narrow lanes of Splantzia and the old Jewish quarter fill up with tavernas and small bars. More about Chania
