The town beach of Kissamos, calm and shallow, with a sandy cove and a long pebbly part.
Kissamos (Kasteli) has two main beaches: a long pebble beach to the east and the smaller sandy Mavros Molos. The water is calm and shallow, which suits children. The promenade is lined with tavernas.
The water is calm and shallow, and there are tavernas along the seafront. The town has a relaxed, local feel, with an archaeological museum and Roman mosaics. It's a good base for exploring the wild west of Crete.
Kissamos is the wild north-west corner of Crete. The landscape is rugged and dry near the coast and green in the hills, with chestnut villages, olive groves and vineyards. Beaches here are among the most beautiful on the island: Balos, Falasarna and the coves of Gramvousa, reached by boat from Kissamos harbour. The town itself is a relaxed place with Roman mosaics in its museum and tavernas by the sea. The sunsets on the west coast are unforgettable.
The west of Crete is the island at its most dramatic. Chania has the most beautiful Venetian old town on Crete, wrapped around a harbour with a lighthouse and a domed mosque. In the evening the narrow lanes of Splantzia and the old Jewish quarter fill up with tavernas and small bars. More about Chania
About 45 minutes from Chania (41 km west).
