A tiny fishing village with an islet.
Mochlos is a small fishing village on the north coast of Lasithi, with an islet just offshore where a Minoan settlement was found.
Mochlos is a small fishing village opposite the island of Mochlos, only 150 m away. In Minoan times the island was probably attached to the mainland. It was excavated by Richard Seager in 1908, and rich tombs with gold jewellery were found. Today the village has excellent fish tavernas along the waterfront and is perfect for a relaxed lunch and swim.
Mochlos is a lovely place for a long lunch by the sea, with excellent fish tavernas facing the islet. The water is clear and good for swimming and snorkelling. The village is small and quiet, with a few rooms and guesthouses.
Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance. Just north, Elounda and Plaka look across to the fortress island of Spinalonga, one of the most moving places on the island. More about Lasithi
