About

Modern Greek art in the old town.

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete is located in the old town of Rethymno. It displays works by local artist Lefteris Kanakakis and other Greek artists of the 20th century.

The museum was founded in 1992 and has a collection of works by Greek artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, including a large donation by the painter Lefteris Kanakakis, born in Rethymno. It also hosts temporary exhibitions. It's located near the Fortezza, in the old town.

The museum is housed in a restored building in the old town of Rethymno. Its collection includes works by Greek painters, sculptors and printmakers, and it regularly hosts temporary exhibitions. It's a good stop for anyone interested in modern Greek art.

The area around Rethymno town mixes a lively Venetian old town with a long sandy coast and quiet villages in the hills. To the east, the beach runs for kilometres past Platanes and Adelianos Kampos, where loggerhead turtles nest in summer. Inland, villages such as Chromonastiri, Myloi, Atsipopoulo and Maroulas have old Venetian houses and tavernas with views. The Arkadi monastery and ancient Eleftherna are less than half an hour away. Try the local snails, staka with eggs and the town's famous pastries.

Rethymno sits between the mountains and two seas, and it is the easiest region to combine with the rest of the island.
