Sitia is a relaxed town in the far east of Crete, built on a hill above a bay. It has a port, an airport and a long beach.
Sitia has about 11,000 inhabitants and has not been affected by mass tourism. It has a long beach, a pretty harbour with tavernas, the Venetian fortress of Kazarma, an archaeological museum and a folklore museum. The poet Vitsentzos Kornaros, author of the Erotokritos, was born here. Sitia is a good base for exploring Vai, Toplou, Zakros and the far east of Crete.
Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance. Just north, Elounda and Plaka look across to the fortress island of Spinalonga, one of the most moving places on the island. More about Lasithi
In Sitia itself, easy to reach on foot.
