Dreros

Agios Nikolaos, Lasithi

About

Ancient Greek city near Neapoli, with one of the earliest Greek temples.

Dreros flourished in the 8th to 6th centuries BC. Its temple of Apollo Delphinios, from around 750 BC, is one of the earliest free-standing Greek temples, and an early law inscription was found here.

Around Agios Nikolaos

Lasithi, the eastern end of Crete, is quieter and greener than you might expect. Agios Nikolaos wraps around a small lake and a lively harbour, with cafés on the water and beaches within walking distance. Just north, Elounda and Plaka look across to the fortress island of Spinalonga, one of the most moving places on the island. More about Lasithi
