Gournes lies on the north coast east of Heraklion. The former US air base here is now the site of the Cretaquarium (Thalassokosmos), one of the largest aquariums in the Mediterranean. Beaches line the shore on both sides.
Heraklion is the heart of Minoan Crete and the island’s busiest region. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two places almost everyone visits, and they work well together on one day.
